Edwing Hull Corrosion Issue

#1

Post by MallardRain20 »

I have a 1999 Edwing 21'. It has been mainly used in salt water its entire life but never moored. I notice today some pitting on the bottom of the hull so I decided to jack it up. So I could take another look. I notice were it sits on the trailer in my opinion there is a decent amount of pitting, probably due to trapped moisture. The pictures I attached are one of the more severe spots from what I can see. I'm kind of at a cross roads on what to due next, so any advice would be helpful. Some questions I have are.... How do you fix it? Is it ok to use in its current state? Does this look severe ?

Thanks
Andrew

Your bunk boards are pressure treated with chemicals including copper to help them defeat rot. When you put an aluminum boat on carpet bunks the copper leaches up through the carpet and sets up a strong corrosion situation. You need to cover those bunks with plastic bunk covers.

How deep is the pitting? Your hull is 1/4" thick so chances are you have substantial thickness left in the hull plating. I would suggest you get that pitting sandblasted then fill with thickened epoxy and sand smooth.

I would say the pitting is 2/32" to maybe 3/32". Do you thing you can cut out the more severe spots and weld in a patch? Also do you think I should use the boat this season and fix it in the winter?

thanks

I live in Hillsboro Oregon. Any idea who can look at it and give suggestions?

What is that glop of white stuff in the photo?

Do any of the pits have deep pin holes or is all the corrosion on the surface?

I'm up north, you could run it as is until you had a chance to bring it up then I could sandblast it and epoxy it. Welding corroded hulls is tricky business
