Shhhhhh. New build coming shortly

Post by wdlfbio »

I sold my North River long ago and am 2 boats past her (28' Grady White and now a 29' World Cat center console). Both being Clorox bottles, so nothing to really post here. But I've continued to lurk. Well, I now have something fun to share. Sorta. I was asked to hold off here and on another site, principally cause you folks are hardcore tin folks and will likely have questions the big kids would need to answer. So, I'll give you some pics if you agree to forgive my ignorance and accept delays with appropriate answers...

There's more work to be done, but she will be at the Seattle Boat Show, Portland Sportsman's show, and even two shows in Alaska after these.

28' x 9'6" walk around, pilot house aluminum Sport Cat, with twin 350hp Mercury Verados!!! This is no coastal pleasure cruiser. It is a serious offshore fishing platform for bloodying the decks and filling the insulated infloor fish boxes. Your own Goatram even custom built the 50+ gallon live bait tank for her, which I get to deliver tomorrow. I'm super excited to see that piece of equipment sitting on the dance floor!

Nice to see your new boat on AAB Laurence, exciting times! Please put all your pics up!

Tell us about the builder and the design process.

Did you solve the rear helm puzzle?

After all the shows bring it by my shop and I'll slap some paint on the bottom for you.

Bob, I was up there today and planned on pitching having you do the bottom paint!!! Saw this...
IMG_2523.JPG
I figured the paint would have been near the end of the process :(. The bottom is just shadowing, not differences in the primer (or whatever that stuff is).

Still debating the second helm. Your example is taking the lead... if we decide we really need one. Having side doors on both sides of the pilot house and a fully washable/drainable floor kinda makes it less of an essential item and much more of convenience.

Goat's tank looks really nice. He built a nice starboard cleaning table/lid for it, but their existing aluminum table fits it pretty nicely.

I'll get more pics up soon.

That is going to be such a cool boat. Maxweld built a few walk around sportfish cats like that a few years ago before they went TU, I had a 27 for awhile but it wasn't full walk around. It also didn't have the forward windshield . . . and it was painted which I did not have issues with but the guys that bought it from me eventually saw failures in the topside paint. I loved the boat but it was spooky making turns at speed as it leaned out which gave everyone on board the feeling like they were going to go over the side. Does your worldcat do that?

Hey, one of the best things I did was to weld a bow eye on centerline about 5 feet back in the tunnel. Made loading so easy because when the boat wasn't quite all the way on the trailer while using the front eye because the cable angle got too high so I'd then run the cable to the deep eye and the pull was straight again and made that last 2-3 feet easy. Also put a warn winch on it with a snatch block so could load it at real shallow ramps.

Those guys at Armstrong should know what they are doing, I'd be interested in hearing how they prep their hulls before they put on the epoxy. The best system IMO is sandblast.

Pretty typical of a catamaran to turn flat, like a quad during higher speed turns. Some of that feeling can be mitigated by trimming the motors differently through the turn. I've never felt, nor has my crew indicated, a concern about being tossed. Then again, I've not needed a very sharp turn at higher speeds. Probably just not quite the same as some of the older cats.

They're having a custom trailer built for this, with an extendable tongue. Another 6' that can extend out for loading/unloading. It'll be a breeze to float this onto any trailer without getting the rear of the truck near the water :)

For the details. I started looking for a new cat last year. For personal reason, I no longer want an open boat (the World Cat is a center console). So, while at the Seattle boat show last January, I started chatting with Cory Armstrong. Turns out, he and his brother parted business and Cory started Armstrong Consolidated. He'd been wanting to get in building a smaller offshore fishing rig, kinda just like what I was wanting. Yeah, 28' is a smaller rig for those boys. Problem is, theymbuild boats. They're not hard core fishermen. So, a couple of us are advising on the build. Cory and crew have been very receptive and it's been a ton of fun.

28' x 9.5'. Fold down radar arch, so she will be under 14' tall on the trailer. Full walk around cabin, 3 sliding doors. Infloor storage all over, including inside the cabin. Boarding doors on both sides, with Plano tackle station in each door. Each door will hold 4 Plano boxes (3700 series). Diesel heater. Even intermittent wipers and freshwater windshield wash

2 forward facing Bentley flip up bolster seats on suspension pedestals and bench seating for 3 behind. Full standup head accessible from the walk around.

Fish boxes (insulated and infloor) up the wazoo. Aft two will drain overboard. Bow two will have Gulper diaphragm pumps. Then there are two midship holds. All with SS gas struts.
Left foot is over the aft fish box (overboard drain). Right foot is over midship general use hold.

This gal is 5'. This thing will hold lots of yumm albacore.
IMG_2323.JPG
Walkaround room. Won't fit two people side by side, but plenty enough to rapidly follow that crazy fish when it wants to circle the boat.
IMG_0965.JPG
Depth of the midship hold. Basically, full sponson depth.

On the bow looking aft. The two bow holds.

The coolest thing is this is their demo boat. I get to run it until after the Washington and Oregon Tuna Classics. In addition, they want feedback, so asked me to get the right people on board for demo rides. I have a feeling there might be 1-2 people from here with enough experience to be helpful and willing :)

What is the estimated light ship (all tanks empty) weight?

How much fuel capacity?

Estimated fuel consumption?

Dry weight (no motors or liquids) is around 7k pounds.

Probably leave the shop near 8,800 pounds.

Twin 125 gallon fuel tanks on this one.

Fuel burn is something that I won't even try to suggest yet. I hate reading about estimates with 2 guys, 1/2 tank of fuel, no gear, and in the bay or a lake. I'm really going to push for real world data with her loaded to the gills (including filling the 50 gallon bait tank and adding a couple drums of water too).

I won't say that 350s are overkill (because I'd have to give up my man card), but 250s would be more than ample. My World Cat is a tad heavier than this will be and I have twin F250s. I get 1.1-1.4 mpg on tuna runs. Fuel burn from 4200 rpm (28-32 mph) to 6000 rpm (44 mph) doesn't really change from that range. That's five adults, 600# of ice, 15 rods, 6 man raft, 40 gallon bait tank. Loaded. I am hoping this Sport Cat will be better than that. For sure, it'll be faster :)

We're guessing she will hit 50+ knots, loaded. Only problem with that is how often does Mother Nature allow those speeds? It's more important to me for her to run effeciently at 23 knots. We face a lot of head seas that are 4-5' at 8-10 seconds with 10-15 knot head winds too. Too much above 23 knots and boats in this range just want to launch. At least with this being a cat, it won't pound when there's a big hole behind the swell/wind wave.

We will put her through her paces, real world, and be able to give true fuel burn across the rpm range.

Oh, I kinda thought this was a new build for you (though might be?) Got to be cool having a chance to develop something like this. My hulls were kind of narrow and didn't displace much which probably contributed to the handling issue plus I really didn't own it long enough to figure out how to run it properly.

So looks like Port Angeles is becoming quite the nucleus for custom alloy boat building? Three or four builders up there now I believe . . .

I started on the idea of it being mine, but some things with dad's deal aren't final yet, so I stepped back.

"hate reading about estimates with 2 guys, 1/2 tank of fuel, no gear, and in the bay or a lake." You know, surprisingly enough those "estimates" are fairly accurate. In fact, my actual numbers are better than what the lake trials came out to be. That's with gear, full tank, food and ice and 2 fat guys plus myself. Only trips that don't get better mpg's are the tuna trips.

That's awesome, and the same I'd like to see. Hence, it's why I'll refrain from posting numbers until I can be certain that nothing will be misleading. 15 January is the anticipated sea trial.  Looking to run a similarly sized monohull side by side for comparison too. I just hope we get snotty enough weather. I hate seeing videos of how wonderfully smooth riding and handling a boat is on bluebird days. What boats aren't?

Swung by the ACI shop yesterday. Had fun going over a few details before the unveiling at the Seattle Boat Show.
IMG_8979.JPG
First thing was to give the boys a little custom gift. Found a guy down in Longview, WA that hooked me up with etched RTIC tumblers.
IMG_1164.JPG
Let's start small. Just the bow. How's this for room? The rail height and angle will work great for fishing, but we found alternative uses last night :). A couple of the self leveling RAM Mount cup holders up there and our RTIC tumblers filled with ice and whatever -life on the water is good.
IMG_1176.JPG
Ample room to get around the sides of the cabin. This is critical for those of us who chase tuna. It's a whole lot easier and more fun to follow a fish around the boat than it is to have them saw us off on a keel. Sliding doors on each side of the cabin will allow fishing crew to simply step back from the rail, into the cabin, when our buddy needs to come running by While following that 30er.
IMG_1169.JPG
IMG_1170.JPG
What's better than a stocking hung over the fire on Xmas Eve? A pair of brand new 300 hp Suzuki 4-strokes with a 9.9 kicker hung on the rear end :)
IMG_3606.JPG
I've read a bunch of great feedback from folks using the new Zukes. Seems they are really cutting into some of the Yamaha crowd. Im on my second boat with F250s, but I'm really looking forward to testing these out. A very economical option for loads of power.

Plenty of head room and space inside the cabin.
IMG_1173.JPG
She will comfortably fish that six-pack group.
IMG_8959.JPG
The cabin doors need wrapped, but that will happen shortly. Adding some grab bars to each, before they are wrapped.
IMG_3605.JPG
Hope you enjoy following this build.
