Jerry Brown Hollow Core And Floro Top Shot

#1

Post by Boston Joe »

A bad thing happened to me yesterday while Cod fishing. I have been fishing 100 lb Jerry Brown Hollow Core with a 65 lb floro leader. I attached the leader to the hollow core by using the Chinese Finger Method. I inserted six feet of leader in the hollow core served it with Kevlar Floss and finished it with line safe glue. I have been fishing theis set up for over a month with no issues. Yesterday while playing a large Cod, the leader seperated form the hollow core. Lost $ 20.00 in gear and a prize fish. Any ideas on what went wrong? Joe.

I've heard of serves unraveling which leads to failure.

You ever seen the use of Sato aluminum crimp kits?
http://satocrimpandwinder.com/procrimpkit.htm

There are many guys using spectra to mono or fluoro to catch big tuna without very many issues.

Good luck and I hope that doesn't happen again.

No problem Marty.

The long range guys out here that fish for the cow yellowfin tuna can't say enough good things about that system.

It's a little spendy though, but after seeing how much gear and tackle that you have, it's just a drop in the bucket

What about that crimp going through your guides? I could see some damage being done. Thank you for the information on them. The cost is a bit much but if I don't drop gear and fish because of it then the cost is worth it. Joe.

The crimps are soft aluminum and they are reporting no damage from them.

Follow the directions, use the eye loop to check your crimp job and you should be good to go.

I second the Sato crimps. Pulled on some big yellowfin no problems. Though I would be hesitant on pulling them through ceramic guides (never tested it, just not a fan of ceramic guides.)

here is a website with some good info:

A cheaper method when I am not paying for the San Diego longrange experience........ it works for me is the Chinese finger cuff method but I also melt the end of my flourocarbon into a little ball so that the half hitches has a little something to bite on. I use Seaguar flourocarbon I believe it has a coating that melts back into a little ball. I do not trust it for any tuna larger than 125lbs.

You may also try the loop to loop method.

Good fishing and calm seas to you.

Mojomizer,
I Just ordered a kit, I really think it will be awesome for our tuna jigging setups. I just didn't like that knot going through the guides! I'll let you know how they work when it arrives. thanks again, mty

Here are some discussions on making your connections to the braided line.
It seems that a lot of the guys like to use the loop to loop connection when fishing tuna.
These are only from the AC board and if you do a search on the BD boards, there is more info over there.

I've seen all of that too....and reeling any kind of metal thru the guides has me amazed. They rave about it all, but it still looks to me like possible guide scraping when that perfect opportunity comes when the metal crimps in the guide and the big fish is right there and takes off.

I suppose roller guides are out of the question? Man, that could be a bad situation, I wonder?

Hmmmm.....

Hey JW, roller guides are not out of the question. In fact they are probably the best type of guide to be using with braid just as long as the braid is not too thin. I once had 50lb. Spiderwire braid get between the roller and the guide frame...not good.

Hard chrome, sic(silicone carbide) and some of the new Fuji guides on the market should not be affected by the aluminum crimps.
If in doubt, you can coat the crimp with Pliobond glue to smooth it out.
