Clean edge paint removal

#1

Post by Kickerdrb »

All,

I have a 2016 alloy boat built by one of the large PNW manufacturers. It has a painted cabin, you can probably guess the rest of the story. Plenty of unsealed holes are causing the old white powder and paint bubbling. The corrosion is currently small. Is it feasible to remove the snap, latch, bolt and sand/ wire wheel the paint off. Leaving a nice tight paint line, kind of like a trim reveal of bare Al and reinstall whatever hardware? Taping and blasting would probably be preferred but would be logistically a pain. Maybe a thin 18ga. Hole template and a wire wheel? Any thoughts or advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.

It would be tedious but possible to mask the spots and blast them with glass bead using a hand-held blaster. Use heavy vinyl tape, a circle punch to make holes in the tape, place the punched tape over the problem areas, protect any remaining good painted areas with more tape, get some #8 glass bead so it leaves the aluminum relatively smooth. You'll get clean edges.

Have you seen the work at RMC? I was just commenting on the zolatone question. RMC sandblasts and powder coats entire boats. Do it once and for all.
