Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
rob,
why not just extend the stern? Seems an easier method? Are the lines (Keel rise in Profile; Chines taper in Plan?) constricting toward the stern(?) so you need to add the extension amidships?
Neat to see the foam mess inside. Still not sure why a 22' boat needs to have foam??
Cheers,

Yeah last year I closed the transom in and Added a stainless marine aluminum outboard bracket.
Currently removing all the open cell foam from the boat before building a temporary skeleton to hold it together and plate to.
Its my personal boat and I am doing all the work with my team here at Pine Hill Equipment in Westport mass

Kevin,
I decided to cut in the middle for 2 reasons.
1 I spent a lot of time and money on the stearn last year on top of re- wiring and re rigging the whole boat. See attached pics.
2. The keel to the deck remains very parrallel for most of the boat. As does the deck to the rails. The chine however does change every length of the boat.My intention is to step the chine to make a subtle transition from old to new over the 5 feet added.

Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
Rob,
it would be very interesting for you to show pictures of the inside of the hull's surfaces where there was foam to see if the metal is OK? or if there was any water-n-foam crevice corrosion pitting sites?
Also, did this skiff have a centerline gas tank below deck? I don't see one in the photos, but a long time Pacific owner, here Jetty Wolf, posted a thread on his tank's failure where they cut out the deck and replaced the tank. Just curious if you have any comments on the tank in your boat (not sure where its located?)?
Cheers,

Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
Kevin,
The only places the foam was wet on this boat was the rails under the rod holders.
It does have a centered 80 gallon gas tank.
There was no visible damage to the aluminum fortunately because the water coming in through the rod holders was mainly rain water aside from a few wave splashes.
Replacing the tank seems like an easy task if there is a local welding shop to you. Cut around the top of the tank, pop the plate out, replace the tank, re weld the deck down again
The ugliest part about production alum boats like Pacific is they try to hide as many welds as possible. The chimes in these boats down the line will be the Achilles heel for saltwater users.i am sure you have seen on yours the chine is not welded on the outside or the bottom. It’s only welded inside. So water can get behind the chine extrusion but not into the hull. Eventually it will rot the extrusion.

Based on the year was the original tank plastic? are you keeping the tank or putting in something different?

Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
Yes it’s the original plastic tank, I can see both sides from the cut I made In the front and a 26x15 hatch in the rear. It doesn’t show any signs of Fatigue or even mildew. The fuel has always been clean so at this point I see no reason to change it.
If I was doing this in my back yard maybe I would reconsider and do it while I had the boat open however it’s very easy for my crew and I to open the deck later and weld it back down

Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
rob,
didn't realize the tank was plastic? Jetty Wolf's tank was aluminum so that was why I asked. He replaced his with plastic to avoid metal tank problems inferred by his original tank's failure. Glad to hear the chambers were dry and have no corrosion - and I can understand why a rod holder might be a leak point.
It will be interesting to see your solution to fairing the lines of the hull from amidships; fore and aft.
I've only seen two Pacific Skiffs in person and both were extremely nicely welded. I thought the quality of build was very high compared to plenty of other builders' skiffs. The TIG work on the stern was just flawless and the interior welds on the decks, console and T top/console was very clean and well done. I do understand concern about one sided chine extrusion welds but have only seen two skiffs with problems there. I think the idea is not well thought out- but.... I don't use slotted extrusions on my skiffs - that's only my view until I see more failures of this type of joint.
Thanks for the thread.
Cheers,

Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
So a few months have passed... all the foam is removed and the boat is now permanently connected again with 59 extra inches in between. Check out the pics

Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
Rob,
neat technique! All you do is put the two halves near one another and TaDAHHH... its one boat again??
Were there any step-by-step photos? We'd sure enjoy learning what you did to join/sister/add-in new longs, resolve the keel, chine and sheer lines back into one skiff!!
I was looking forward to seeing some explanation photos for many questions? But its good to know that "all you do is put the halves close together"- at least that's what is looks like i the pictures!!
looking forward to a little more detailed set of posts? Before and After shots are fine- but not very much of an explanation!
cheers,
Kevin Morin

Looks like you remembered to add 5 feet to the trailer too.
I too would be interested in seeing a bit more. Did you add more frames?

A real life example of why the teachers wanted to see the process in math class. :)
Re: Adding 5 feet to a Pacific 22...
Outboard bolts to bow she is now 29 ft...Some more pics, sorry for the lack of desire to explain every detail. Every Boat is different, Dream it, get your hands dirty and do it, don’t over think it, it will work it’s way right as you go. Enjoy
