Corrosion?

#1

Post by Hunter24 »

Just bought this boat last year. Unfortunately found some corrosion on the outside randomly mostly on water line that created small holes 5 or so. And I looked in the bilge and this is what I see. (Talking about the brown stuff) Anything to be worried about? Doesn’t look really pitted to me just really dusty/sandy texture or is it even corrosion? Any input would be awesome and also what can you do to prevent further corrosion. I am fixing wiring as it was grounded to the steering so I will be fixing that by putting all grounds direct to the battery. Would it be worth taking boat part and taking foam out to inspect or just fix the holes I have and not worry? [album][album][/album][/album]

Hunter24,
welcome to the AAb.com Forum, don't recognize your handle so I hope I'm not extending a welcome to someone who's been here for years?

I hope I won't appear to be an internet 'troll' for mentioning that your post's pic is not all that helpful? Any aluminum boat with a wooden member might be subject to lots of corrosive agents that are implied by the presence of UN-encapsulated (by epoxy) wood!

Not only that, but the pictures' information is kind of vague; as the bilge coating of material is not contrasted to any actually cleaned area of the metal - that might allow some comparison.

So, my first suggestion is that if time allows? you consider a use of the search and archive functions here and take time (if possible) to research the plural dozens of inquiries about bilge conditions of the various boats in posts and threads here?

Second, I would suggest you find some means to wash the bilge of the skiff you show.... with the aim of revealing the underlying state of the hull and structure? This might be done with soap and warm/hot water if the coating is solvent in soap? On the other hand you may need to rely on some or another petroleum solvent (Stoddard Solvent or some 'Orange' solvent?) to clean the bilges of the visually obscuring coating?

Asking anyone what to do, what implications may exist or what can be the future of the hull's restoration are somewhat dependent on the underlying metal's surface condition. So... I'd suggest some Hotsey+Soap bilge cleaning?

As to the holes or rivet-to-paint involvement? Few if any experienced boat owners, builders, repairers could reply (remotely online) without some decent images of the event sites' status. And that will require a visual image not a textual description.

Hope you're able to clean up the hull enough that the AAB.com Forum can help make proactive remarks?

Cheers,

You are correct I am new here and Thank you for the reply I used an aluminum safe cleaning pad and got down to metal in certain areas. After looking at it it almost seems like that black coating they put on it turned flaky brown as kind of seen in the picture. After the first run of the season this year I was planning on scrubbing some areas as best as I can and see what lays underneath. Just seeing the corrosion on the outside by the waterline which ended up being very small holes After cleaned to bare metal I am just kind of paranoid especially not knowing what the inside looks like unless I rip everything apart. Thank you again. Will post better pictures when I get a chance sorry about that.

I don’t know if this will help at all but this is a section cleaned off. Sorry as it is hard to get a phone in there to take an pictures. Also put a picture of some paint bubbling that is starting on the one side Of the boat, can sand down to clean aluminum but just curious as to what kind of corrosion it is?

Hunter24,
no worries about timing on washing YOUR bilge! I'm having to work everyday of the week (on a 34' welded aluminum boat I built in 1983!) at an indecent age to be doing that.... and haven't got any time constraints on your project!!!

The main idea at this time is to get the bilge cleaned some way- so you can show others what's there- and they may be able to provide an informed suggestion or two.

I just refer to "Million Item List" of My Major Mistakes on welded aluminum boats... then I post what I recall here!

Good luck with your boat.
