Need help reducing hull noise in v-berth

#1

Post by redemperor »

Having owned forward cabins in the past and sleeping on the deck in a swag, the misuss and I never really had a problem getting sleep. Now owning a larger boat with a V Berth, what is the best way to reduce the water slap noise inside on bare aluminum. Carpet is an option but is there a better way. Any help, advise appreciated :?:

PEEL & STICK SOUND DEADENING

#2

Post by Ironwoodtuna »

Ironwood used a peel & stick rubber sheet with metal backing on my boat for the entire below waterline area and back wall of cabin that worked great. My boat is so quite with the cabin door shout, that even with my big diesel engine, the dB levl is less than my Ford Expedition. I sleep like a king in my boat, in fact other than not having my wife to snuggle up with its the best sleep I ever get. Marty

Marty,
Do you think that insulation will handle a bilge area that gets wet and is damp?

It will be fine, I had a leaky hatch the first year and mine got wet in my center compartment. Its four years old and still looks and works fine.

Thanks ironwood, I've seen the material you used. That should be ok in the area I'm wanting to quiet down. Dont think I would like to use it in a bilge area though. I'm glad to hear it worked :) , as I wouldnt like to go to all the trouble buying/fitting etc, and find out it dosn't work. Is the foil heavy duty?

Yes, it pretty thick for a flexible material. I would use it for the entire waterline area. you'll be suprised how well it works. it will be worth the effort and cost. mty

Here is a link to the material that is in Marty's boat. John from Ironwood boats put me onto it.

Hi

As well as the Eco Damp sheet in the hull we use an 1/2" acoustic foam/insulation on the ceilings and walls. Sounddown will have this as well. We use the carpet underlay below the plywood floors in the cabin.

Sincerely
John

I am very naughty.......but I meant Truck bed liner????

Proliner-Herculiner-Rhinoliner, there millions of them...

It stopped the sound dead in an ole ping-pong boat I had that was a non-liner boat. No more water sound on the hull.

Another really cheap solution is EAR PLUGS, for $1.99. They use them to sleep on Navy boats with all the banging and clanging going on 24/7.

Met these guys at METT a commercial boat show in Amsterdam...

http://www.mascoat.com/db.php

Their company has a great demo of how effective the product is and I saw it used once on a custom 43' alloy trawler with good results.

Listen to the two .wav files for the difference on a caoted bell...

Never used the product myself so I can't vouch for it but we may use it in the future if we start doing more cabins, etc.

Good luck!
