Fuel tanks

#1

Post by fowlwaters »

Looking at some mud boats that have a built in fuel tank up front on the bow and wandering if the same alloy is used that the hull was made out of or use a different alloy.

Thanks

What are the hulls made out of ?

Some Mfr's will use a softer alloy for the tank [ Read, less $$ ]

It could be the same material as alot of crops can be generated when fabricating boats. It's a good application for crops to make fuel cells. My guess would be most mud boat are made from 5052 aluminum but I could be wrong. Then again those mud boats are quite thin skinned so I hope the fuel cell is thicker (at least 1/8").

Yes most of the hulls are 5052 and are 1/8" thick I was just not sure if 5052 would hold up to fuel or not.

The fuel tanks that West Marine sells are made out of 5052. Stephen Pollard's book states that tanks must be a minimum thickness of .090.
