Smarty Jr. for the Cummins 5.9L

#1

Post by welder »

Just got home from a oil change, Tire rotation and fresh air filter and my Cummins is a Happy camper.
When I reinstalled my Smarty I knew I was off on my speedO so I used the ABS feature on her and now I am within .2 MPH +- it's hard to find a long flat road here but I'm so close it hurts.
I used my Hand held GPS to double check my speed along with Mile markers and time.

I had to drop .4 inches in tire size to get it to read right and it took 3 tries with the programmer , getting closer each time.

Dave it's Mechanical stuff with some electronic tech. thrown in there . I can adjust the Power and timing settings as well as the wheel size and % of power the Engine puts out.

My Speed is now set [ Due to tire size ]
I am running 40HP and more torque above factory to get better MPG [ Economy mode ]
I will try the towing mode when pulling to Florida [ 70HP ]
AND
will load the 100HP mode just to see what it does for MPG and all around performance .

My Smarty Jr is so good! I have not been as accurate about MPH, only to .5 is good for me...I let the dash speedo read faster than I go so it keeps me out of the radar. I need to do an update download...but I just don't want to as it is doing so well as it is. I have it on step 3 and she is great with the 19.5's and the 245's which are about a inch taller than stock...si the speed adjustment is so cool and then the tires being bigger the RPM's ahve dropped about 150 revs for the same speed, another fuel savings...Turning about 1825 for 70mph instead of the 2K before tire switch.
S Jr is awesome! And I think with out the JR and doing the tire switch i would be combating the power curve. I turn 555# at the wheels on the dyno but only 315hp...it has to do with the whole setup.

Good to see some else getting the bennies! Capt PJ

Gauges?

Have you guys installed the necessary gauges to monitor your EGT's, boost and fuel pressure?

I wish that I had the extra $$$ to boost the power and driveability of mine... but I don't :banghead:

While reading the diesel forums, they ALWAYS recommend gauges to prevent the destruction of your expensive a** motor or are the EGT's monitored by the Smarty Jr.?

my added instruments are Pyro, Trans Temp, Boost...I don't need the fuel pressure as the 2004 is not prone to fuel pressure drops as other models were. Most important is the Pyro especially pulling a long hill all loaded up...with out the boat in behind I cross the scale at 13800...the boat is under 3000...not yet had a chance to cross an open scale with the whole rig...will be interesting to get an accurate number. The trans temp would be the next important to me...keep both of those looking good and I am happy! I agree gages are really needed when start fooling around, but I was surprised at how good the readings are even when being pushed, Cummins is pretty tolerant engine. Warm regards, Capt PJ

BTW, we have gale force winds today on Puget Sound and the Straight...will I ever get to go halibut fishing?

I talked to Bob Wagner [ Smarty Dude ] and the Smarty will run the EGT's about 300 degrees lower and the Jr. chip is good with a stock motor although I wont use the 100 HP setting to tow with just for my own pieced of mind.

I do want 2 gages , EGT's and fuel pressure .

Could be both! It is the Smarty that makes adjustment to the speedo and you can dial in in thenths to get the speedo accurate. Or you could go get the tires shaved and trued! NO JOKE! Capt PJ
