2000 Dodge 2500 lift pump / injector pump failure

#1

Post by jrbaldwin »

I was 5 mile from my home towing my boat heading for the boat ramp when I lost all power / brakes / steering in my 2000 dodge 2500 pick up with 24 valve Cummings diesel with out any warning from any gauges that there was a problem with the engine. I had my truck towed back home and pulled the codes P0253 & P1688 which means that the lift pump failed causing insufficient fuel pressure to the injector pump resulting in the fuel injector pump failing. There is no light, gauge or any other device to let the driver know that there is a problem. A new injector pump supplied by dodge cost in the $3000.00 range and a re-manufactured pump costs in the $1,500.00 range.

A owner of a dodge truck stopped to help and asked if I had installed a fuel pressure switch with a warning light. He said that the lift pump failure is a common problem with the 2000 - 2003 Dodge trucks. The aftermarket warning light only cost $50 and if I had known to install it would have warned me to pull over before the fuel injector pump failed saving myself a lot of money and several days of fishing. A new lift pump is only $150 and easy to install :banghead:

Jim, check on http://www.cumminsforum.com , there are a lot of dealers/shops that have some good deals.
I need to install a Fuel pressure Gage on my '07 just for peace of mind.

Look at the FAAS rail mount fuel pump/filter , it uses the factory harness and you don't have to drop the tank.

Also check at http://www.genosgarage.com Ram stuff only. That's where I buy my goodies.

You must have a 100K + miles on the truck , do the water pump NOW if you haven't, they are about $50.00 at Geno's.

Thanks for the links. Member of http://dodgeforum.com but will check out http://www.cumminsforum.com. Any special tools needed the change out the injector pump?

Have been reading about the FAAS rail mount fuel pump/filter as a good replacement for the stock system, more reliable with better pressure. Will also be ordering the pressure switch / warning light.

Currently have 170K & haven't done the water pump yet.

Jim, let any of your Buds that have those year model motors to do the Fuel pumps and Water pumps when they hit a 100K .

There are tutorials and Videos on the Cummins Forum I believe to help with the R&R.

Jim, I replaced the Vp44 injector pump in my 98.5 a while back
It cost me around $1200 and a full day of my labor
There are a few extra tools that you need to get the job done:
Wobble extensions for sockets:
http://www.harborfreight.com/9-piece-14 ... 67971.html
I used this set but thrashed them after the job was done(lifetime warranty!) but you may want to get a better quality set

Here are some good instructions on how to do the replacement:
http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98-5- ... build.html

This is where I purchased the rebuilt replacement. Very happy with the customer service:
http://www.mwfi.com/VP44.htm

I also relocated the lift pump to the frame rail in front of the fuel tank and used the stock lift pump.
This location turns it into a "pusher" pump instead of a lift pump. I actually got 3 more lbs. of pressure by moving it there
This is what I'm talking about:

As far as the pressure gauge, a must have item according to the internet forums
I went with a mechanical pressure gauge which I got from here for cheap:
http://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.asp?c ... yword=NFGA

One of the advantages of a pressure gauge is that it will alert you if the fuel filter needs replacement or the the transfer pump is starting to go out.
I believe the warning light set-up turns on if the pressure drops below 5lbs.

This is where I tapped in for the pressure line

Let me know if you have anymore questions if you want to take this on yourself
