Spare Tire Mounting Bracket

#1

Post by IN2DEEP »

I had an issue with my frame mounted spare tire mounting bracket
It appears that there are different designs on how they attach to the trailer, so this won't apply to everyone.
I have this one on mine: http://www.pacifictrailers.com/spare-ti ... ed-finish/

I would have not seen this had I not checked checked the spare chain/padlock to make sure that it still opens
I've heard of incidents where spare tire brackets break while trailering on rough roads (Baja)
When my 2004 trailer was new, I looked at the tire bracket and thought that it looked HD and I would never have any issues with it.

When I moved the chain back, I noticed a crack next to the U-bolts that clamp the bracket to the trailer frame

It still felt solid, but I knew it needs looking after.

When I removed the spare tire (first time ever since 2004), I also noticed that the tire is resting against the U-bolts and causing some serious wear on the sidewall!

Image

Image

I think some plastic tubing slid over the U-bolt should help a lot to cushion the rubbing spots

When I removed the U-bolts, the metal had fatigued and cracked from the weight of the spare tire vibrating.

There is one thing that should help to prevent the movement of the bracket while trailering.
I noticed that the front of the angle iron is not touching the trailer frame which allows all the load to be placed on the top surface of the angle iron.
If it were touching, you would see the wear marks on the trailer frame.
The reason it doesn't touch is because of the inside radius of the angle iron.
If you were to add a spacer plate(1/4"?) under the top surface of the angle iron and make it the correct width so it doesn't rest against the radius, the front surface will be able to contact the trailer frame

That's about it.
What ever kind of bracket your trailer has, it wouldn't hurt to look it over

Carry on!

I bent the heck out of the old this May on the last leg of the trip into LaPush. There was a sign calling out the bump in the road; only problem was it was 40' past the bump I hit A friend saw the trailer jump and a puff of smoke from the tire hitting the road. It twisted up the old original carrier. Instead of trying to unbend it I stuck on a new one for $40.

Good info to know thou. Glad you had no reason to use it thou.

Good thing you caught that soon enough. I have a similar one as well but the ubolts would not fit my frame tubing so I just welded the prick on :gunner2: .

Scott if ya have the room, just lay the tire across the front or behind your winch stand and secure with chain or nylon coated steel cable and a lock.....and check that tire pressure, is another thing.

I have and will always have a trailer way larger than actually needed (Length & Capacity) learned that long ago.
Just for things like that and the extra security a larger trailer gives ya.

Not a bad idea at all. I would have to add another cross member to support the tire.

I repaired the damaged one.
Cut the damaged angle off and had a new one welded on
Increased the thickness to 1/4" from 3/16"

Added an aluminum shim to elevate the angle mount so the inside radius doesn't prevent the other side from contacting the face of the frame

Scott, did you coat that Alloy Shim with something or are you going to let it be a sacrificial anode ?

I was thinking the same thing!!! I see that you painted the steel or is it spray zinc coating? A piece of plastic Starboard would work well as a spacer and not be sacrificial. Good thing you caught it, could have been a really bad thing at freeway speed! Nice work!

Mine should be OK not that old, but will look at it in the morning! THX for posting! PJ

The best setup I had when I trailering a long distance was I welded a spindle off the side of winch-Vblock post, it kept the setup out of the water when launching and I had complete spare hub and bearings ready to go

I had one of those setups on my last trailer....and never used it.

But at the same time, if your doing a "roadside hub changeout" make sure ya have a pallet of paper towels in the bed of yer truck. Cause it's gonna get messy, folks :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
