Used motor

Post by pjay9 »

I am looking at a used kicker... 2002 Yamaha 8HP T8 tiller with tilt, electric start, high thrust, 20"...new impeller, timimg belt plugs...SS prop gard to keep down rigger wires out of it. Saw it today, started on first push cold...some wear marks and some peeling paint on mounting bracket, tank and hose included...asking $1895.

I know they are the 9.9 detuned some, and that the price is a dealer ask...I am looking for comments and what to look for's...

I think I'll start offer at 1200...if there isn't any issues i should look for...it has manual choke and idled down within about a minute and half and just purred...

Is there a way to see what the hours are on such an engine? Is there a dealer plug in to check for hours and codes? THx for the input...PJ

No way to check hours on it. No computer or hour meter installed. Only thing that goes on them is the tilt unit. Price to replace or rebuild. Any corrosion around the electric motor on the trim unit? with it mounted on the stand and some one standing on the stand Can you pick the lower unit up by hand? If you can the Hydraulic unit is dirty and needs a rebuild. :soap:

Did not try to pick up...but the unit rasied and lowered thru the whole swing without a hesitation and sounded strong...no whirring or bumps...stopped when when I changed directions a number of times...Thx for the pointers.

So what about price any ideas!

Three rivers has a T9.9 for $2900 new. $1895 is to high for a ten year old motor. Issue is Yamaha does not make the T8 anymore. People like the T8 so much that the used ones that are Legitimate ie (Not Stolen) don't last on CL or the local fishin websites. They are bought as soon as they appear. Buy the new one and its new and with warrantied for 3 to 6 years depending on Yamaha's Yess program

Do you know who's boat it came off of?
Charter boat or weekend warrior?
Charter motor might have a lot of hrs racked up on it

I have a 1988 T9.9 w/electric start on mine
It still runs but internal corrosion has not been kind to it.
I had to rebuild it due to the oil tank corroding through where the exhaust tube runs up thru the middle of it and replace the mid section due to corrosion
Granted, mine is a much older model. Hopefully Yamaha has improved upon these issues

One common issue that I've seen is blocked cooling passages including mine. It runs hotter on that part of the head
If the design hasn't changed, while the motor is running, pull off the the hoses to make sure water is coming out both top and bottom ports of the head
I mainly use mine for slow speed trolling (just above idle)

Well after calling a number of ads on used 8 and 9.9 and then dealers about new 9.9..I have decided to just go ahead and do the new T9.9LPHA tiller electric start, tilt, high thrust longshaft. Going to pick it up in Troutdale, OR at Siglers for $2895 on my way back from So.Cal at Thanksgiving...Going to call and make a deposit on Monday...sort of a layaway...Now does anyone want to buy a 1985 15HP Johnnyrude pull start longshaft with built in charger?

I was actually glad to have that 1985 motor two weeks ago when I went to eastern WA for a week...I made sure the boat batts were charged but I guess not enuf as they wouldn't start the 90, roll it but no start, so I launched the boat started the 15 and let it sit while I set up the camper and it helped with the charge but just not enuf to start, so grabbed a battery out of the camper and away we went...the 90 brought them back in a big hurry...I suppose the 15 would have eventually charged the batteries.

One thing I have not asked...is the new 2012 9.9 Yamaha a pull start as well? Anyone know? PJ

pjay,
I think that the T9.9 is electric start only
They supply you with a starter rope to wrap around the flywheel and pull start if need be
