New 22

I have owned an Aluminum drift boat for years but late last spring I decided to expand my capabilities into the big pond. Working with Joe Koffler over a few months we designed and he built a new 22 Koffler Bay-bee for the clan. Why did I choose Joe? after looking around at the cookie cutter boats and talking with dealers I decided to go to Joe who has built 3 ocean boats in the 28 foot size for my cousin who guides in Sitka. He still has the original 28 which he acquired in 1998 and I have been the gulf of Alaska fishing numerous times in less then desirable conditions and I have always been impressed. In my opinion a guy thats makes his living, is a success (30 years), puts well over 900 hours on his boats every year and still owns all 3 is a darn good testament to a product capability and quality.

I opted for an open boat because I valued the deck space, wanted no canvas, and like the ride of a center console. I also opted for a splash well concept once again because of useable space. The boat has 36+ inch sides, 34 inch transom, and is setup to fish albacore when conditions are right, mooch kings out of Westport, chase kings all the way up the Columbia into the reach and fish the Puget Sound when the fish show up locally. Also went for a custom built trailer designed and built for the boat by Koffler. With the 175 Zuke, 9.9 Zuke and fueled it weighs out at 5060. The all welded heavy duty trailer I suspect weighs close to 2K and the boat fits like a glove, it is impossible not load the boat straight. The motor seems to perform well, fully loaded we had her to 40MPH @ 5900 RPMs using a 4 blade 18 degree prop. The boat has 100 gallon fuel tank, dual bilges, bait pump, and 32 gallon bait well on the transom.

Got her out in the ocean in mid September with 3 to 4 foot seas, big tide going over the bar, wind 10 to 15, and 4 big guys she handled well and we caught a bunch of nice coho.

Nice looking boat, is that weight with the trailer? Speed is impressive for a single 175. Is it self bailing? What is the deadrise and type and thickness of the aluminum used?

The bottom is .190 sides are .125. I opted not for the self bailing since it drove the price up substantially, my cousin's boats are not self bailing and he fishes every day out of Sitka in the Gulf of Ak from late May till the Labor Day. He recommended an extra bilge. Also since I am not doing this for a living I'll stay home if the weather is iffy. The bow dead rise is 46 and the transom is 12, when mooching for kings or on bait a stop for tuna the lower transom deadrise makes the boat more stable and she rides a little higher. With console aft of the middle I am not compromising the ride and with the 4 blade prop and the reverse chines the boat really comes out of the hole nice. I forget to mention it has 84 inch bottom and is about 104 wide at the top of the rails. In the 80's my cousin guided in Cook inlet and the Kenai, they were motor size restricted on the Kenai, they would fish 4 clients and the guide with a 2 stroke 40hp and they got around ok, so i knew the 175 would work and I would get good MPG. I see a lot of heavier boats (wood floors and whole windshield) with a 150 Yamaha that perform ok so I was confident that the 175 would do ok. I cruise at 28/29 at about 4200 to 4400 RPMs.

Here is a bottom pic

Here you go on the pics

Yes the boat sitting on the trailer with 25 gallons of fuel weighed 5060

We did a little test, we loaded: two 35 gallon garbage cans with water, two 150qt coolers with water, filled the fish box (another 150 qts). In addition we had 1/2 tank of gas (50 gallons) and two of us on the boat when I had the 3 blade 18.5 pitch prop on. The boat still did 35MPH and I was over pitched (could only get to 5500 rpms) I have since switched out the prop and get to 6000 rpms

The floors are diamond plate that is sand blasted which reduces/stops glare and makes it non-skid. Another unique Koffler item. No plastic / No Wood construction
