Unfortunately the Coast Guard suspended the search...

Sounds like the kid was a mental case of some sort if you can believe the news article.

Like Chaps, notes, the article (updated) seems to have a few items that make this tale seem like there's much more to know? In the article, evidently the boy had staged some form of "gone missing" a few years past? This young man had some syndrome or another? ... all indicators of someone who may not have a firm grip on reality?

Another item; there's a note the mother asked her friend to call if she hadn't been in contact by a certain time? What is that all about? I'm not saying this young man's mental state - for a fact- contributed to whatever happened to the him and his Mom but - there are some sure enough cringe worthy notes in the article that give pause.

Last but not least : a 32' boat? A THIRTY TWO foot boat? that is a non-trivial size to 'go missing' and from the photo- if the size is accurate? that implies a welded/self-bailing deck- or in other words- what would cause such a boat to have 'problems' leading to the crew going missing?

It will be interesting to learn if there is any follow on, or better yet; any conclusion to this sad story?

Cheers,

I don't think the CG has completed the investigation yet. It's also very hard to pin point the direction he was found in. He had a raft so I'd assume he had food and water for the time he was in the raft but man 8 days is a LONG time in a life raft.

Lots of speculation regarding this case......

This was however an interesting pic  Certainly not a boat builder option :hammer: Will be interesting to see how all of this plays out. I can see where this "baking sheet" hatch could be a big problem in a taking on water situation

Statements from the article are almost pure malarkey if anyone is believing the picture of an all deck/walkaround/weather helm boat is somewhere where any of two people "can't see the other" all the time! (Maybe there was a head compartment but it was still on deck.) Further, if he didn't think the boat was sinking what was the 'safety equipment' he was handling for? Further, still, the 'raft with food and water' is a bit of foresight!

People are to believe a grown woman, not incapacitated, was not observing and making some racket about a flush deck boat being awash? Hmmmmmm....

Not liking the sound of any of this. Unless we saw the boat's design and layout better, we can't really speculate very accurately what's likely to have flooded her but... the Mother's request to her friend to make sure to call the Mom's phone - surely does sound like concern by the Mother to me? Inferring from the other links and articles: Grandfather has bucks- he "dies" (is murdered) & his four daughters inherit- (Is) this story's Mother of the 20some yr old guy one inheritor? - (Now) who inherits from her? How much does Jr. get after this "accident"? Is this a follow the money type of 'who-dunnit'?

AlloyToy, sorry to miss the reference- where did the hatch type info come in? (I didn't watch the video- so may have been in there?)

Cynically watching this unfortunate family's saga - because of the metal boat.

Hi Kevin,

I think that the reason the the hatch is being pointed out is because it is a "non" water tight hatch unlike the stern hatch questioning if indeed the boat would have went down as quickly had the front hatch been the same as the aft hatch.

That said i totally agree that something is "fishy"

The boat is a 31' NON ALLOY JC Downeast hull which was modified to accept the fabricated pilot house which I believe was done by a fabricator here in the Cape Cod Boston area. I saw the boat about two weeks before this incident in the salt pond where I launch. It looked like a solid seaworthy vessel however that is only by sight while passing by

Alloytoy, thanks for the heads-up about the boat construction - I'm out. No interest in plastique boats- they go missing every day.
