Haddock Massacre

#1

Post by Capt. G »

Sunday's charter on Stellwagen landed the largest catch of bull haddock that I have ever cut as a mate on any boat or as a Captain of my own. Throw in a dozen nice market cod to 15lbs and it was a day to be remembered. I cut fish all day as the bite was relentless. My four customers left the boat with over 150lbs of Haddock and 50 lbs of cod fillet!

On one of the drifts we hooked our first porbeagle of the season. My customer was retrieving his jig when it got slammed about 20 ft from the surface. Unfortunately the top shot chaffed on the bottom of the boat on the initial strike and after a five minute fight he broke off . Good news is the gear I use handled the fish and we had a good shot at landing him...next time!

If you want to catch haddock...now is the time to give me a call.

Ya gotta watch that if they go away with that much "meat" they may not show back up for awhile.

If you are cleaning fish aboard, I'm surprised you don't get more shark action. Wish we could.

These guys eat a lot of fish  ...I already have deposits on 3 more trips.

No dogs around yet but when they show I rip into a bucket and dump when I make a large move. They are PITA

Everyone is haddock crazy right now so I give them what they want.

Whale cod are starting to come in (big hint)...personally I prefer to eat 10-15lb markets...the big ones (like you showed) make a great photo though. Believe it or not some of my customers release them to go do their spawning thing.
