My Chum Chopper Build

#1

Post by JETTYWOLF »

I'm looking at pipe, 8 inch pipe and or TUBE.

2 feet will do me. But as I look I see wall thickness' of .250 and .25 It doesn't have to be thick walled. This will have no structural anything....just a pipe.

SIMILAR to this...but this guy made a tuna tube out of his too:
Built in Burley Bucket.jpg

It's a tube that will be welded in to my transom platform. The 8" round cut out will be the bottom of the chum chopper and will be welded on to the 8" tube. Making for an open top, and a capped bottom. 1/2" Holes drilled in it so the chum can flow.

Not really sure what I need as I look.

(2 foot prices really differ!)

Any help is what tube or pipe to use would be helpful.

Dave , the .250 wall thickness will be easier to work with and weld better, meaning will look better on the back of your boat.

Speedy metals lists the demensions as such:

Dimensions:
A: 8" OD - 8"
B: 7.500" ID - 7-1/2 "
C: .250" Wall - 1/4"

Really..... 1/4" wall thickness????????

Scuba Tank - Aluminum 80
http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/spo/2182310725.html

You can find some out dated for less, might take a look at your local dive shops.

Cut the top off (I have tools for that) drill your holes, weld in place.
I think an aluminum 80 cf tank has about a 3/16 to 1/4" wall thickness.
The tanks can also be found with a raw brushed finish, so no paint removal required.

Why so picky :banghead:

Tank Dimensions
For most people, the standard AL80 at 26 inches in length is a bit too long to be comfortable. The steel HP100 at 24 inches in length seems about right for the average diver. Even the larger-volume HP119's are very manageable at 24 inches. The AL63 and the HP80 at 21 inches are a nice length for divers of smaller stature. For children and smaller women the HP65 at 17-inches is a good choice. The really large-volume tanks like the LP120, HP120 and the HP130 that range from 28 to 30 inches in length are a bit unwieldy for most divers, but a viable choice for tall divers over six feet in height. With longer tanks, you must take care when you set your BC harness to make sure it's not too low on the body of the tank. Otherwise, you may hit the back of your head on the regulator first stage when you enter the water.

Height Tanks
17 Inches HP65
20-21 Inches AL63, LP66, HP80
24 Inches LP80, LP95, HP100, HP119
26 Inches AL80, AL100, LP85, LP104
28-30 Inches LP120, HP120, HP130
Tank diameters are a more significant consideration. Most primary tanks, aluminum or steel, are the common diameter of 7-¼ inches. The AL100 and the large-capacity low-pressure tanks, such as the LP95, are 8 inches in diameter. Some of the larger-capacity high-pressure tanks, such as the HP119 and HP130, are also 8 inches in diameter, although the HP120 is a 7-¼ inch tank. Your BC will fit the 8-inch diameter tanks just fine, but if you have to switch it back and forth between two different tank diameters, constantly readjusting the BC tank band(s) can be annoying. Also, some dive boats have tank storage racks that don't accommodate the 8-inch diameter tanks very well. However, the 8-inch tanks are rapidly increasing in popularity, and boats are beginning to make accommodations for them.

Diameter Tanks
7-¼ Inches AL63, AL80, LP80, LP85, HP80, HP100, HP120
8 Inches LP95, AL100, LP104, HP119, LP120, HP130

Lets see, by the time I spend the time getting with lets say that dude in Middleburg, drive 70 miles round trip then have to cut the tank, drill the holes, and the bottom may not be exactly flat. I could order a exact 8" piece from the place's I listed for the same or cheaper.

8 inches holds the ammount I want and fits perfectly in the room I have onmy platform.

The question I was actually asking VIA the links I put up was opinions on the wall size / type - Pipe vs round stock / and prices.

I'm gonna go ahead and order this: http://www.speedymetals.calls.net/pc-46 ... minum.aspx

Jetty,
If you haven't order your pipe yet, let me look in the rack in the morning. $7.00+/ lb is a little steep. I understand there making money selling small pieces. Send me a PM if I can help.

Yeah, I appreciate it. But time, and cost is always at a premium.

I believe I found it cheaper than that Welderbob, and have a piece on its way......thx.

What are you going to use for the chopper blade?
The Braid one from the other chum tube (That's if you still have it)

Folks....I want ya' to take note.
This here is a man with his shet together. and a mind like a steel trap.

Yep, Scott I still have the other one. The idiots around here all know it works, but are so stupid. Feel it's to much of a commitment to "permanantly" mount something to their plastic boats. I even took it to my sportfishing clubs "swap nite" and had a $50 tag on it. and no one wanted it.
I had a Braid Chum mate on the transom of my old boat screwed on for ten years.

So I'll use the Braid chopper handle it will work fine. The 8" piece of pipe will be here tomarrow and gas just went up a quarter over night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So no summer trolling for this guy. Drift and chum with Pogies aka: Menhaden....yankee "Bunka".

A buddy who has Cobia come up to his transom each summer and want to get into his Braid chum-mate says the little known secret is, start out with half a box of any squid as "THE PULP", then add in Pogies as you go. Which was a new one on me, but he swears by it. He says the ink really gets going, and makes them go nuts.

Next will be the weld shop and I'll be ready for summer. My starboard trim tab may get coated with fish and squid slime, because it'll be right under the chopper bucket. But it'll be worth it.

When complete I'll post pics, of course or do a video most likely.

If the bottom of your chummer doesn't get submerged into the water often, you're going to have to run water via the washdown pump to distribute the chum. Mine dips in the water unless there is a fatass on the other side :scuba:
Here's mine (as already seen here) made with 6" abs tubing
A little different design than the Braid brand on the chopping blade
Been on the boat for 14 yrs., I think

SWEEEEEET!

Yeah, mine will dip in the water. Remember, even if I don't have a full boat of fat Americans, there will be at least one fat azz on the boat, walking over to the starboard corner and that's ME.

Personally, I don't know how I went all this time without one. They're great for even washing rags out on the way home.
I've chopped ole chicken parts in it before, and when we caught the fish they were burpin up hunks of chicken skin and bones.

The pipe should be here today.....so to the weld shop this week I hope.

Even thinking about one of these: "hoop around motor" Makes the boat a true SUV - sport utility Vessel! add in my SS skeg protector and I'd be really in there!

Cuz, from time to time I swing around and hit stuff, when I'm in a tight spot full of structure doing my float-rigging for Speckled Troutz.
(this boat was up at Jay's in Maine when I ordered my boat, we all went out on it. The owner bangs around oil rigs when fishing the Gulf of Mexico.....the boat had everything on it, almost )
Gonna get a price on something like this.

#1 reason for using ABS was because it was available.
I have no regrets with using this material
From personal experience, I try to avoid white PVC because it seems to get brittle from being exposed to UV rays.
Same with some white HDPE (3/4" thick) sheet that came from McMasterCarr that developed hairline cracks after being exposed to UV rays.
Someone told me that black doesn't allow the UV to penetrate past the surface, which helps with longevity.

Who's Tommy?
