Is that some kind of subliminal cultural message?

The link worked for me. Could not find the blue eyed brother, though. I wonder if the captain piloting the barge is related to the EXXON Valdez captain Joe Hazlewood. The article said the reef was very well charted.
Spending my kids inheritance with them, one adventure at a time.

I hope more that they stop the flow of fuel. The beaches its coming ashore on are some of the best and most popular in NZ. An absolute shame.

I dislike it happened a lot.

Bevan (AMF) is (or was) based in Tauranga. He might have some shots that haven't been filtered by the press.

Hi this certainly is a disaster in one of NZ's most iconic holiday destinations, but also has been one of NZ's fastest growth areas for family's shifting to live. Beautiful white sand beaches, rocks, and huge estuary area. The biggest holiday destination the Coromandle is a close neighbor. The reef the Rena is stuck on is the most popular fishing spot in Tauranga. I feel sad especially for the environment, for all those whose lively hoods are effected and then those that have to live amongst the stench. I am sure they well get the place generally cleaned up as quick as possible, I hope the long term health check for the area comes through well in the end. But all the same it is horrific to watch the event unfold, with worse to come.
We did relocate our Tauranga(Mt Maunganui) factory early in the year to join our Wanganui factory under one roof (opposite side of the north Island) where we have black sand beaches, a river bar and an exposed west coast to deal with. So Brian and Jodi are here in Wanganui with me now. But we sell boats all of the country and already this seasons urgency for boat buyers in that region is diminishing.
So I am watching the event from my computer like most people and don't have the opportunity to share any thing more than I find on the net. But if you want i will share the interesting links I find.

Starting here, this isn't a bad time line told as story as the event is unfolding.

This is a bad thing to have happened. As I am a Captain, granted not on such large vessels, any incident could be bad for the environment. That is why we have training and practice for such things on some of the vessels I have served on. It will be interesting to read the reports about what happened after the investigation and hearings. While I was looking for more info I came across this URL, that could be of interest to some of you.
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/defaul ... level0=100

The whole site has some interesting aspects. I looked at the Anacortes Harbor and it shows all the WSFerry departures and arrivals, as these vessels have AIS systems and can be tracked. Only one of the three vessels I work on has an AIS.

If anyone finds more info, pls keep it coming. I hope the clean-up crews doing the best they can for all of our Kiwi Brothers and Sisters. Capt PJ

Thanks Capt PJ for the link I had heard of the link but I hadn't seen it yet, very interesting and useful I have been using it even tracking a ship I had a boat on going to Melbourne.

I have a real problem with posting too much about this oil, as the media get thing unbelievably wrong and so much ends up being contradicted. But I have found a good link from Maritime New Zealand the Govt. department controlling this maritime disaster. This link has some great images to help tell the story.

http://maritimenz.govt.nz/Incident/gallery.asp
click on each of the"headings "
Beach clean-up
Salvage/on-water
Wildlife
Media conferences

To summarize my understanding from media, at the moment they still have some 1300 tons of oil on board and the ship is breaking up with risk possibly at any stage for it to break in two. (some pretty brave Salvors working to make this right). The oil is very slow to remove and large swells from heavy weather is hampering efforts. Apparently 350 tons has already leaked, 100 tons removed. Surprisingly good jobs of cleaning some of the worst hit beaches have been made, but with so much oil still on the ship things don't look good. Oil and containers are being found further afield each day.

This Satellite pics isn't bad either but as it says the image is "likely" to show the oil.
