Very nice work!!!! Did you drain the oil from the lower unit? How hot did it get while welding?

When I welded my outrigger flanges it had to have been 5K degrees :D

I left the oil in and change it after I'm done.

The weld area gets pretty hot but
the heat dissipates fast enough not to cook the oil

Notice he is on a WOODEN work bench as not to send the current thru the bearings but stright to the ground clamp.

He knows his job.

Nice work gandrfab. Pre fab skeg?

Welder, I don't understand why current running thru the bearings can have an adverse effect on them.
I do know that a steel welding table can cause arcing on the work piece in undesirable areas if the ground is on the table.
I'm not arguing with you, but would like to understand.

Thanks, Scott

current running thru the bearings can be very bad
along with other stuff I have destroyed
like hinges, bolts or just about any thing you need to
move metal on metal

fold down towers
when I leave the ground on the bottom 1\2 and weld up top
ark mark then gaul seize oops
a few hundred $$$ mistake

Pre fab skeg? Yes most if not all OB motor dealers can order them

Scott, when current is passed thru bearings it can/will arc weld them or take the hardness out of them [ by the heat created from the arcing ]which will cause WAY premature failure of the said bearings.

Always clamp the Ground as close to the work [ welding ] as possable on and make sure the clamp is secured on a good clean area.

Also on some jobs when a metal bench is used be sure to clamp the part down to the bench as arcing may occur between the part and the bench.

No hard feeling here , I should have explained better to begin with, my bad. :D

gandrfab,

Your explanation was plenty clear to me. I'm learning about new things from this site without having to experience myself.
Keep on sharing, it's much appreciated.
