Local WSB and Barracuda
I'm beat
Here's some pics from this past weekend
More details to follow...
Okay guys, finally got the chance to edit a video of this successful fishing trip
Two weeks prior, some spawning squid had moved into the area which attracted some hungry white seabass.
I didn't get the chance to fish for them when they first showed up.
There were no reports of catches being made on the days prior to this trip.
We got to the squid area and were able to jig some squid up in the morning to use for bait later on.
When we were jigging the squid, I hooked up on the first WSB on a jig in the rod holder.
We stayed in the area until 11am and caught a dozen Barracuda before moving to an area to try for Halibut.
We fished for Halibut for a few hours then my buddy Phil, hooks up while using a leadhead and squid.
At first, it was just pecking at the bait then decided to eat it. It freight trained Phil on it's first run.
I started filming after he had been on for a few minutes.
He was using 65lb. braid with a short piece of 30lb. fluoro (right kind of tackle)
He did a superb job of fighting it.
We ended up with the two WSB- 27.5lbs and 48lbs, a dozen Barracuda and 1 25" Halibut

Good looking fish! Totally different than what we get up here. Are they all good eating?

There's some nice WSB. Top notch eating I hear. I hope to catch my first this fall in Monterey Bay, providing they show again as they have the past few years.

Pete, the WSB are great eating, moist and very mild tasting. Can't go wrong when cooking it.spoiled one wrote:Good looking fish! Totally different than what we get up here. Are they all good eating?
The Barracuda are great for smoking, some, but not all like it cooked.

They are on their way up to your waters as we speak.Fisherman wrote:There's some nice WSB. Top notch eating I hear. I hope to catch my first this fall in Monterey Bay, providing they show again as they have the past few years.
The big school that was here 3 weeks back showed up in the Ventura-SB area last week. My guess is that they are migrating up the coast.
How long did they hang around up there last year?
The main body of fish stayed around here a short time. Maybe a week?
There seems to be some stragglers left around here still

Re: Local WSB and Barracuda
Most of them were caught late Auguest-October. Most of the fishing here is drifting squid as the fish follow the squid into the bay as they spawn. It's just an amazing catch, especially when you can keep 3 of those big fish each day!IN2DEEP wrote:Fisherman wrote:How long did they hang around up there last year?

They just blow by here and make a brief showing.
Maybe your area has a better squid supply?
They must settle in up there and do their thing

Re: Local WSB and Barracuda
As the squid spawn in Monterey Bay, the fish hang around and slurp up the squids as they die. Most anglers will drift fresh dead squid to mimic nature. It can be hit and miss at times, and it may just depend on if/when you drift over a school of fish. They can be there for several weeks and then dissapear the next day. You just never know. When the squid dissapear, so do the fish.

Re: Local WSB and Barracuda
Too cool
A "angler" posting pics, right on
That's kinda funny for me. Your "WSB" are nothing but giant SeaTrout to us here. (which I'd love to catch!)
And your Barracuda's are so small and skinny looking. Our's are thick and get huge.
here's a small one as an example: Just the opposite, from right to left coast.

Re: Local WSB and Barracuda
White sea bass are giant croaker. They hit hard, fight like hell for a minute or two then just roll over. Very intimidating the first time you hook a 40lb fish on your inshore bass rig with 15lb test. If all your knots are good, you don't get wrapped in the anchor chain or prop you will wear him out in short time.
Do those sea trout make a croaking sound when you bring them on deck? WSB sure do.
To the OP Well done!!

Re: Local WSB and Barracuda
EAST COAST:
Redfish aka: Red drum
Seatrout
Croakers
Black Drum
are all in the DRUM fish family.
Yes, Male Trout, drum or croak.
If we were fish archeologists, we'd probably know that your WSB are just cousins (giant cousins) to our SeaTrouts here.
Yes, OUR seatrouts are not Olypians either. But they are my absolute favorites, because NOT everyone can catch large ones. It takes pateince and skill in Bazzaro world, Florida (here) Because we have hardly any.
COMPARED to GULF COAST areas, where seatrout thrive. Especially, Louisiana
Sooooo, if I was to ever visit the left coast I'd have to at least get one 20 pounds, so I could kinda make it look as if I caught it here (shady, blurry photo) and make everyone think it was a new Florida record.
I don't care much about FIGHT, I'm into numbers. I fish, for food. Cuz I'm usually broke.
Thanks for sharing In2Deep. You are my California, fish hero.

Re: Local WSB and Barracuda
Lester,
All my video editing is done on a Mac using the iMovie program that it comes with.
My stills get adjusted in iPhoto or occasionally in photoshop elements
I'm going to bring my macbook to Alaska so I can show you some of the basics of video editing.
... Or, I can save your footage from the trip and put together a video using all the available footage from the trip
BTW, there is no gopro footage in this video but I can edit the gopro footage in iMovie also.
95% was shot with a Flip UltraHD with a wide angle lens mounted over the existing lens
You can see the set-up above my head in this pic

Once you go Mac you never go back! They are hard to beat for personal use if you are into video or photo
editing.
Bring your Mac book along. We can charge it on the boat.
