Made a decision on a motor

#1

Post by buck3 »

So I am planning on getting a motor soon and cannot figure out which direction to go. Itis going to be a second boat for lakes and near shore use. I don't plan on rivers but it will be beached.

The options are a used 60/40jet, a new 50hp prop, or a used 40hp prop.

I talked to someone with the same hull, but without the motorwell, that had a 60/40jet and said he wouldn't go any smaller. He said it topped out at 26kts and did ok with 3 adults, but I would suspect the 40prop would do better then the 40hp jet.

Here is the hull its a 16' Skookum and tag says 55hp max.

I would rather have a prop than a jet if a jet was not required, jet requires a larger motor for the same rated HP.
I would go with a new Honda 50hp of all the new 50hp available.

I have been asking around and scouring the interweb to look for used engines and found

A 2007 Yamaha 60/40 tiller for $4500 (used 1hr)
A 2012 mercury 60/40 with controls for $5,500 (used 2hrs)
A 2013 Suzuki 50hp with controls for $5,300 (new)
A 2013 honda 50hp without controls for $5,700 (new)
A 2010 Mercury 40hp with controls for $3,500 (used)

Going to look at the 40hp and merc jet Saturday. Just want to know which direction to lean.

You cannot. Go wrong with either the new Suzuki or new Honda (Warranties are a good thing  ) Now the major question would be which motor has the best and closest service? Which mechanic do you trust the most?

Jetty you are a very funny man............. 225 Honda on a 16 foot boat.

I would probably have to open the motor well up a little for that 225hp. Would be fun though.

I would like a new motor, and I already have rigging for a Suzuki mounted. But I would like a new honda. But I would like to save $2k by going used.

Merc service is 30min away. Honda and Suzuki are 90min away.

Ya wanna freak out those Pacwesters up there :?:

Get one of these and modify the boat a little....You'll slid across a wet sponge. But cool as all hell. And you'll have the only one in town :!:

Sorry are we talking about about 4 strokes or 2 strokes :?:

JETTYWOLF
Seen one of those in a 10hp diesel, thought it would make a great auxiliary motor no need for two fuel tanks, just the main tank, unless you run out of diesel, then not so great. The other thing they weigh way more than any outboard for the same hp.
Cheers

So I almost ended up picking up that used 2010 40hp Mercury. It is from a lake and never been in the salt. It has some scratches on the hood, but look to be cosmetic only. He said it was tied up next to a piling in the lake. I hope I don't regret not getting another 10hp, but a new motor was stretching the budget. Looks like its time to get serious about working on that skiff.

Any idea how long the merc warranties were in 2010? Has a build sticker of July 2010.

We all have to operate within our budget. Mercury mechanic witin 1/2 hour.

Seems........ Yes you can get warranty transfer. http://www.mercurymarine.com/service-an ... erwarranty
I believe 3 year Warranty so Warranty will probably end 2013???? Maybe a extended plan can be bought????

A 40 Hp on a 16 foot Alloy will be good on gas ........ maybe a bit slower but who needs to tear up the water and kidneys to get somewhere minutes sooner???????

Maybe before you buy the Merc have the Mechanic check it out first??????? How many hours are on the motor? Any history of mechanical failure?

Looking forward to seeing and reading about your project

He said if it has any problems I can bring it back. So I bought it already. I need to have the bearings checked out on the prop shaft, but the price reflected it. There is about a 1/16" play front to back, nothing side to side. Is that something that can be adjusted, or is it time for new bearings?

I need to have the motor well boxed in and moved back because the 4strokes are a lot longer then the older 2stroke engines. So I need to call someone and set that up.

Buck3, I just checked the end play on my 90HP Mercury. The prop shaft has some very minor end play, probably around 1/16. The only noise it seems to make is VVVVRRROOOOMMM :rotfl: :rotfl: . But still a good idea to have it checked out, you never know if it is normal or not. Better safe than sorry  . I personaly wouldn't think that little movement is a problem, there is probably a "spec" for it. Good luck & let us know how you made out.

Well here is the motor. Everything looks good under the hood, there is a rub mark from being tied up along side a piling.

I also have some pics of the skiff, but I need to have the motor well boxed in so that the motor will hang on the transom. It is too shallow, which I could fix with some trimming, but it is so narrow that I wouldn't be able to turn.

If anyone knows of somebody that could box in the motor well for me I would appreciate it. I have been having Crozier do all of my welding so far, but he just started another boat and is 3weeks out right now.

Well I stopped by and they moved their shop, that's why it was hard to get ahold of them. I dropped it off yesterday and it will be done today or tomorrow. I'm going to have to post some pics when I get it back.

They had a few projects going on. Didn't want to bother them too much. I'll peek a little more when I pick it back up. Probably Friday.

Can you give me a link to that mud motor.

Thanks
Black Beard, here is a link to one made in my neck of the woods. Lots of them on skiffs around here. With them when you hit the mud flats, the boat SPEEDS UP.
