It's been a while since we have talked about our Flare kits, is everyones up to date and easily accessible ?
Get out to your boats and check the date dates on your safety equipment.

And don't forget about your trucks , I have to do my Coolant change on my Cummins , it's 5 years old already .

EPIRB, Signal Mirror, Hi Vis Orange Distress Sheet are all needed (compulsory) down this way. Earlier in the week a shrimper rolled when nets "hooked up" on some reef (?). One guy did not get
off but one did & activated the EPIRB. That is the only reason he is alive.

Flares last a long time...so don't toss them away..wrap them up in a good plastic bag and stack them at the bottom of your distress kit with the new up to date ones on top...so when inspected you are legal and safe...use the old ones to prctice and to keep on hand as more ways to signal after all the new ones are used up. I was told this by a USCG Inspector on my Inspected Charter boat...he told me that on the side after he did the recertification on my vessle...they even squeezed all the PFD's to make sure the floatation pouches were not ruptured (one had to be replaced). Keep those old flares handy.

I hear ya Pjay9. In the old days we used to scuba dive alot and the lobsterman always thought every diver was stealing their lobsters. They got real confrontational at times, I've even been threatened with guns(shown, not shot at) So I kept a few containers of fuel and my old flares and told them you will probably miss but I won't, got their attention and they left us alone. Mostly just calling their bluff.
