Hello
Hello
A friend of mine recommended this site to me. Pretty Cool!!
I'm not that great with introductions, but I am a welder and I build things out of aluminum.
Here's an eighty Gallon bait tank I made for a friend while it was in progress:
I built my CC from a broken down 14ft Western skiff:
.
To in Progress:
To Fishing:
It's now sixteen feet and very seaworthy. As you can see I ripped out the seats, put in a deck, built a bait tank seat, a console, raised the bow, closed off the stern, added a extension and rigged it with twin sixteen outboards.
It has 45 Gallons of fuel capacity 20 gallons under the deck and another 25 in a special tank I welded up that acts like a forward deck. At 4 to 8 mpg I have more range then I can use.
I take it up to forty miles offshore for Tuna etc..
Never had any problems, though I have had it in some pretty good seas and do get pretty wet at times.
When things get rough I just pull up one moter to save fuel and slow down.
Still trying to get a Marlin on it, but as of yet just strikes but nothing to leader. Mostly I fish Offshore Tuna with it:
Inshore T sharks:
And in the winter I fish Lobsters:
I also Kayak and make stuff for them as well:
Here's the bait tank fishing console and tank I made for my fishNdive.
Here's my hoopnetting rig on the same Yak for hooping lobsters.
As to skills I mig, tig, spoolgun, aluminum Bronze stainless etc.. If it's metal I can weld it.
I make most of my living making custom items, mostly artistic or architectural. For friends I'll make racks t tops etc... and occasionally I repair some old boats mostly Bayrunners in the 18 to 21 class. Once you get a rep for welding old rotten boats people will beat a path to your door.
Here's an old skiff (16 bayrunner) that was falling apart so I added some gunnels for my buddy. He's still fishing it.
So there you have it... I guess now I need to look around the site...LOL

Whitesboro, Texas Huh!!! I went to school in Sherman and spent a ton of time fishing Dennison Dam. Still get homesick about it.
Nows the time... May June is my favorite time of year when they start eating Redfins and Pencil poppers.
Man I miss that place.
What's the lake record now? When I left it was unofficially 36 pounds.

Jim , I think that record still stands but a guy named cody mulnick caught a 120+ pound Blue cat [ SPLASH ] a few years ago and it was taken to a state tank and she lived for about 4 years , they say she died of old age.Jim Day wrote:Thanks!welder wrote:Jim,

I heard about and saw pictures of that fish, beautiful Blue. I think I used to fish with his father.
Now that is an offer I will keep in mind.welder wrote:If ya ever come back to Texas be sure to stop in , we have room. :D
I always loved that town as I passed through it all the time on my way to Ft Worth down 377. Used to be pretty small.
Speaking of old trivia here's a Striper from Texoma that went 36.5:
Thats from the Dennison Herald if I remember correctly..
I got it at the wall below the dam at about a 11pm on a Saturday. 1/4 ounce yellow bucktail below a cork. Took me well down past Ray's baitshop. 36.5 on his scale that night. Of course back then 1983 they had blue laws and I couldn't get to a certified grain scale until Monday morning. Missed the state record by about a pound at 34.5 or something like that.
It's disappointing to hear the records not risen. I know I have seen 40+ stripers in that river.
Ever fish PK? I used to fish there as well but never got a fish over twenty. A while back a friend told me they got a fifty+ striper out of there. I caught some quality fish below Grandbury but never would of thought Possum Kingdom had that kind of fish.
Just goes to show you never know what's in there to you get it to the bank.
Nice site. Thanks for the warm welcome.
Jim

Hey, I have one of those...while not rotten yet, it's on the older side.
I might be beating a path to your door one of these days!
Welcome Jim,
Thanks for joining the site.
Looking forward to sharing your projects and knowledge.
Post all the pictures you want. Everyone here likes viewing them.
Expect to be asked questions and don't be afraid to ask any yourself.
BTW, the owner of that 16ft. Bayrunner is also a friend of mine (Tom)
Great job on bringing it back from the dead

Small world...
Man... Toms boat was really broken up. Every stringer had ripped off the bottom and the port side was moving around so much the port rail snapped off at the transom. He came in for a few cracks and I had to gut the thing and start over. By the time I got the hull back into the right shape it had some 1/4 cracks in the hull, up forward.
The deal with Tom is I didn't know him that well so I felt kind of funny telling him that the real issue was structural not just the surface issues. He let me do it right though, and I was very happy with that boat in the end.
Gunnels make all the difference on those 16 to 20 Bayrunners. The more they move the more they crack. That skiff was solid after we put them on, they really stiffened it up. They are easy to make too. I'm surprised they don't offer them for the smaller skiffs.
Hey..just curious.... Do you know what Honda he put on that boat? I'm thinking it was 50 or 60?

Jim,
I believe he powered it with a 50hp Honda which was installed by Tradewinds.
He used it up in the Sierras at Lake Crowley this past weekend.
He has some pictures of it after he painted it with some Zolotone paint.
Looked great with new paint. I'll post them up here after he sends them to me.

Hi again Jim,
Tom sent these pictures over today of his 16' Bayrunner skiff that you brought back from the dead.
Looks like he went with a 40hp.

Les, I've never been on the boat myself but I'm sure it pushes it as fast as it needs to go, especially on the ocean.
I would think it is capable of cruising @15 kts. or so and still have a comfortable ride ...and barely sip the fuel

Looks great.... Sorry for my late reply here, I was looking for some pictures of that skiff in progress so I could show how beaten up it was but never found them, and then got sidetracked. You got to see it before and after to really understand the changes Tom made.
At any rate thanks for those pics
Tell Tom if you see him that it looks great. I was very pleased with how that one came out. It's always great when someone lets you do what really needs to be done on a boat.

The transom, while having some pitting and extra holes, was left untouched. Patched the damaged areas with a 2 part type epoxy.
Are you having any corrosion coming through your transom?
Almost every older thin skinned alloy that's used in the salt, including mine, ends up having this issue eventually.
If it ever comes time, I've considered replacing my transom with a solid 3/8 plate with stiffeners to eliminate the wood which holds moisture and promotes the corrosion.
