PLBs
So, I just received an email from BOE showing some holiday specials. I am currently looking at PLBs and he has this one for $175 and change. ACR AquaFix™ 406 Personal Locator Beacon w/ Onboard GPS
I like the idea of portability, so I can take it along with me when I am away from the boat, too. What do you guys think?

Re: PLBs
Spoiled one- I am trying to find the article that I read on those. I wanted to get one for my ditch bag, but a bad review gave me pause. If I remember, the battery doesn't last very long. It is rechargeable, but by 3 years they go bad. They are not user replaceable, and ACR charges over $250 to replace it. Cheaper to just buy another one. Anyway, let me keep searching, and see if I can find that article.

Spoiled one- here is the link to the article I was telling you about.

Bottom line, having a personal EPIRB is a significant benefit to safety, and being recovered in a timely manner. Especially in waters where hypothermia can occur within minutes. I will be buying the GlobalFix™ PRO 406 MHz GPS EPIRB Cat I for the Diversion, as well as the AquaLink™ View PLB-350C for my ditch bag. I guess in the scheme of things, when you consider cost over time, it is a small price to pay for piece of mind.

for what I thought was alot of bang for the buck when it came to features. I keep it on the ditching bag and instruct all passengers to make sure its lanyard is around someones arm if ditching. If things happen too fast the ditching bag has a bumper tied to it on a 8' rope to help locate it in the water. Hopefully this plan is never tested.

Re: PLBs
Just remember to REGISTER your EPIRBS and PLB's with the Coast Guard when you get them and just as Important is to follow through when you get rid of them or sell them so the right Info. is known by the CG.
