Brass and aluminum

#1

Post by BWFLU »

Hello i have a 1648 jon boat that i put a baitwell in and not knowing about how brass and aluminum react with each other i put a brass pick up on the boat thinking it would hold up better then plastic with pulling the boat up on beaches and such. Did i make the wrong choice? It has a lot of 5200 betwen the hull and the pickup.

Personally I think its a mistake, below water line only stainless and aluminium, even better just aluminium on its own. I would be changing it to either aluminium, PVC or some plastic, then stainless, preference in that order.
Brass is a lot more noble and when placed in the water will create an electrical current between the two different metals. Aluminium being less noble losses in the the end and slowly deteriorates, therefore you end up with holes, in your hull, Not Good.
Maybe someone else can explain it better.
