Aluminum Gheenoe?

#1

Post by gandrfab »

Does anyone think it is possible to build a aluminum Gheenoe.
I'm thinking about giving it a shot.
Thinking about a one piece bottom, with an 8 or 10 degree break one piece for each side and a transom.

Yes, a great paddle or poling boat, I may make them also.
Work is slow, I need something to do.

I have begged, borrowed, haven't stole, and won't deal drugs without the wife's permishon.
So I keep on keeping on finding stuff to weld.

Jetty

The Gheenoes are much different than the pirogues. We have a lot of them around here. They seem to me to be a small bay boat. You can put some big outboards on the Gheenoes. Personally, I don't really like the Gheenoes. They seem to have a high center of gravity. I wouldn't want to be caught out in big water in one. I would go almost anywhere in a canoe or a pirogue.

I made a card board mock-up, pix aren't to good but it looks like it can be built.
1"= 1' 15.75" long.
Transom corner= 2"
4.5" beam.

Hard to see, but on a Gheenoe the hull bottom is wider then the gunwall top making it inherently stable.

Looking like this is going to happen.
Transom changed too 16"
beam staying the same, but the length should get close too 16'

I have a local laser cutter that I have done some welding for to cut the sheet metal.
I think I'm going to go with 1/8"

It was glossy cardboard and available, I would use glossy cardboard for any taped together (guess) project.
The tape comes off again and again, and sticks right back on.

1st one will be 16' because that's what the local shops have and can handle.
If 16' goes over well we might go bigger.

I do have a guy that I weld for that is a dealer for a few surface drive out boards.
I haven't talked about this with him yet.

This would be cool if made of alloy......probably could be lighter, stronger, and who cares if you drug it across a beach, or threw it on an oysterbed.

Specially since all that paddling around is so popular now. I was hoping Kayaks would be a fad, but it looks to continue with these things.

But at least it has a seat for fat folks like me. So it scores at least one point.

Yeah so :?:

Those yakers folk pay nearly that for a plastic bottle that they have to paddle around and sit in a weird position all day.

C'mon

Is this gonna be a Florida version of a "pirogue" :?:

Guess thats what a Gheenoe is already as I certainly don't see gheenoes in Louisiana.

More of a mix of the 2,on a pirogue the gunwalls lay out on a gheenoe the gunwalls lay in,
