Re: Alaskan's what a people 2012
Was that a ding or dent??? Moose burgers or just dusted itself off and ran away???
Hunting with a friend in Colorado a mule deer ran out onto the road suddenly....... His Chevy truck smacked it's head. Later going into a little Mom and Pop diner with full Camo on.(Normal sight hunting season) The waitress asks get one yet???? Buddy says yes..... waitress asks what he was shooting........ Buddy says 454...... She's appalled and wide eyed ................ Buddy then inputs............Chevy
Next on the picture list since we were comparing vehicle's in SpoiledOnes household. Comparing Virgin Alaska Camera eyes from 2010 and 2012. Some Pics are so close to being the same

Close to $5K in damages. Truck was drivable and the moose ran off without any broken legs. Not sure whether or not she became part of the food chain or not.

Pretty much. If I would have been driving my Subaru, it would have come thru the windshield.Sabs28 wrote:Small "ding" then?????spoiled one wrote:Close to $5K in damages.

If mojomizer lived in Alaska, he'd understand! Currently only one of our 3 vehicles has a cracked windshield, and that windshield was replaced only 2 years ago. I'd left that cracked windshield in place until one of my boys spidered it with a basketball so it had to be replaced.spoiled one wrote:Hey, I could replace them, but they just get cracked again. In fact, I have been driving the wife's rig all week (she is working in Honolulu) and added a new ding this morning.Sabs28 wrote:Pete, My Friend, What is it with you & cracked windshields????
Might be time to replace it, eh?
Which reminds me of my truck this summer. The front windshield had been cracked for years and you never want to replace it because you know as soon as you do a rock will fly up and bullseye you within a month. Well I was doing the spring cleanup of the yard and our metal fire pit was rusted out. I was a bit over-enthusiastic tossing it in the bed of the truck and took out the back window Since I was taking it to the shop for new glass and went ahead and had them do the front and back windows.
The glass isn't nearly as bad as dents running up and down the side of my truck from trying to pull my boat out of the backyard. Nothing like making a 90 deg turn with a trailer on a sidehill between a tree and a fence. I stored the boat at a friends yard in the valley this year.

Heh heh I fully understand the cracked windshield thing. A cheap price to pay living in the outdoorsman paradise. I read a article that only tourist drive around Alaska in vehicles with pristine windshields. Alaskan Barbies drive around in Subaru's with cracked windshields (please no offense to any Ak women)

I've never make it very long on a new windshield before I end up with a ding.

Re: Alaskan's what a people 2012
Colorado was the same on windshields. I gave up trying to keep up with them. Unless it was really really bad no one cared. The flat windshields on our Jeep and 2007 FJ cruiser were the worst. The small aerodynamic cars did better. Never got a ding in 2008 civic, but that car was parked November through April.
We replaced windshields more because they got so sandblasted you couldn't see in bright sun.

Re: Alaskan's what a people 2012
Yep, the ol'girl is a 2006 Ford F-250 Super Cab diesel with a 4 speed manual transmission with overdrive and low gear. I know a lot of folks have had issues with the 6.0, but I have had no real issues with that motor (knock on wood). I really like the truck, lots of room, feel safe driving it, and it pulls the boat like it isn't even there. The truck knows the route to Whittier by heart now, which is nice for the return trip home when I am tired and need a quick nap. HaHa I really only use the truck in the summer to pull the boat on the weekends, so I figure it should last a while. The only modifications it has are winter studded tires, side steps, a back rack, winter front and tinted windows.
. . . well sometimes one has to prioritize!
I used to be able to get the truck into the garage. I moved a few things around, raised the small garage door 12 inches or so and . . .. . . well sometimes one has to prioritize!

Re: Alaskan's what a people 2012
The real question should be: How deep? A lot of the water we boat in is not fishable by mere mortals with normal gear.carpetman wrote:That would be me. I'll be a newbie from TEXAS. Gonna see what all that looks like up there. I've only fished small stock

We have spots over 2000' deep. It would be fun to do some deep drops if the winds and tides cooperate. Better eat your wheaties, Scott!

At 2000' it sounds like time to break out the electric reels and target black cod, or smoke it for sable fish. Then your talking great FISH, But my sounder is only good for about a 1000'--- dang another few bucks OH and the the reel... HUM... could be an expensive fish?

But Pete, I shot a really nice group, Dugs fish was from the X-Men, it was a super fish not a 60lb mojo tid bit.
And, it was wearing armor plate, yeah that's it, body armor.
Come on Dug, Pete uses a shot gun with #2;s and we had to use a .45 with a 3" Barrel on a moving boat shooting a moving target.
