RockSalt 275

We all know the story of the rise of RockSalt Boats. Hell I went to the Miami Boat show to see it for myself. Its such a hard sell to get the boating public to see the benefits of the "miracle metal " here on the East Coast. I really though that Jay was the guy that could change the public and government agencies perceptions of aluminum boats. Well not for a lack of trying, The welded Boat Co. and Jay parted way some time ago . Not to let the whole concept of the deep vee aluminum boat die, Bill Lincoln acquired the rights to the name and his designs. This allowed him to keep the design alive and offer it to this other clients.

Well sound Marine is excited to announce that we're the first one to give it a go and build a RockSalt 275.(hinted of this in the for sale thread ) This will be the same hull as the Stanford Police boat. Our customer is a go fast kind of guy, he also dives commercially for shellfish. This will be a very bare bones boat. At this point the boat is getting a pair of "take off" 250 hp E-tec outboards. The Stanford PD boat was delivered with a pair of 225 Optima's so the performance should be similar.

The cutting files have been modified to suit a few of the customers needs /wants. The hull is the same. The material is on the plasma table and should be on the shop floor next week (barring another snow storm ).I promise to post a full build thread to keep you all on the edge of you seat. The console has changed a little from these drawing, but this should wet your interest. I'm having a little trouble attaching the PDF. Will try and get Les To help.

Hi Bob,

That's a good size boat, a "pair" of 250HP etec........he's gonna fly and test all your welds!

I have a great connection at Marine Max in RI if you ever need it. They sell Sea Rays, sailfish and ..... to the more wealthy people at a wealthy marina. If you ever wanted to chat them up you know how to reach me.

You need to get your boat on "Wicked Tuna" hauling a slob...... that would help your sales!!

Fan Farkin tastic BOB :!: :!:

It's not really the East Coast in my mind being here in Florida.......IT'S FLORIDA! where they are very very close minded.

So not sure if Jay and the BIG Miami Boat show did nothing but produce comments under ones breath, "for so-called Floridians" down there in Miami, (where no one is really a Floridian, anyhow) Just NY transplants.

I could imagine getting that big RS in the hands of a Keys Fishing guide only...."If it was wrapped or painted up like a billboard".

Keep us in some pics as you go along.

You need to impress AlloyToy. He needs a TUNA size boat. A, ALLOY-PISSAH'

Why does Mooringman say the words 2 stroker...Etecs??? Hmmm....mine would have to get two 4 strokes for sure.

ALLOY,
You gonna go with Etecs when Bob builds yours???

We're only going with Etec because the customer has a pair that he wants to put on. I would put a pair of 250 Honda's on mine. If Alloy wants a few more ponies we can do Yamaha's.

Don't get people, and me, going on the 2 stroke / 4 stroke thing Jetty. Come change my twin Honda oils, timing belt and adjust my valves and then we'll talk......but not race because I'm running Hondas! Then there's the Honda 130 head issue.....Love my Honda's but not turning my back on the 2 strokes! Noting better then the sound of twin optimax motors running at 4500 RPMS!!

Cool boat pic, it even has a tuna door!

So for any new guys out there I'll start the process from the beginning. If I leave something out I'm sure someone will chime in and remind me.
The boat is designed by Bill Lincoln @ Response Marine. It was originally designed for the RockSalt guys which is a whole another story. After a few minor change to the "cutting files" the file were sent to Yarde Metal to be cut by high definition plasma cutting .The are several methods to cut the nested files(waterjet, plasma, router) . Although this boat is being plasma cut if anyone has an extra $120K lying around, I'd love to cut this on a router. The proposal for a new router is on my desk, just needs a check and enough work to keep it busy.
All the cut parts are delivered on a large (8' x 24' )pallet. The cut/nested part are removed from there skeletons and any "good scraps are saved for future projects. The rest goes in to the scrap box, which returns .55cent/lb. After checking all the pieces against a master list of parts basic assembly can begin.
All part that needed to be bent were separated from the flat pieces and bent. Bulkhead frames get ring frames were specified. Meanwhile thing like the console and fuel tank can be built.
Hopefully tomorrow we can start to assemble the frame.

There can be. Don't know if you'd want a diesel at this point. (Tier 4). Don't know if you'll get the catalytic converter in a 24' .
If you though outboard boat were expense, wait til you look at an inboard diesel.
30k engine and gear
7/8 K for the running gear
exhaust system

and then you have to fit it all in the boat you want to fish in.

Finally cleared enough shop floor space to start our RockSALT 275 PROJECT. All the parts have been routered as needed. Now we just have to figure out where they all go.
More pictures tomorrow.

Hmmmmmmm, (2) 225 Honda's I've had in the last 7+ years and don't find that a bother at all. Since all I do is the same maintenance as I would on a Two stroke Merc, plus oil changes.

Never had to change any timing belts (probably minutes) compared to a timing belt on a merc. And have never adjusted any valves.

Hey, I had a Honda BLOCK with a hole in it and water spraying everywhere. Still better than the Evinrudes and Yamaha's I blew up with bearings going metal to metal with LACK of lubrication. Which has happened to ever single 2-stroke I ever owned, all the way back to a 1974 15 horse.
UGH.

Changing my oil in 10 minutes, this week as a matter of fact.

I was just "voicing"

Today's progress; tacked up the transom and back bottom plate to keep every thing lined up. Hung the side plates. We'll finish pulling the plates together before starting the bottom plates.

Well the end of week one finds us with the frame assembled and the side and bottom plates tacked on the frame. Now we can start welding the plates to the frame. We'll do most of it on the jig just the way its sitting in the pictures. For us older guy's it easier to stand-up and weld than climb around on our knees.

Well despite a snow storm or two and a Flu epidemic in the shop the Rocksalt 275 is finally has the right side "UP". I was hoping to push a 24' baby brother through the shop to use as a demo boat at the June workboat show in New Bedford MA. The problem is that there seems to be an aluminum shortage at Yarde Metals. Maybe my customer will let us that this big boy.

Looking great! Just out of curiosity what is the bare hull weight for this boat?
