Modified Cope 36' Patrol boat build thread
So here goes nothing, Unwrapped 10,000 lbs of aluminum, and started sorting last week. waiting for I beam for jig frame so started on pilot house first, as soon as the rest of the jig material shows up I'll move pilot house outside and wrap up till needed. Here's what I've done so far.

Re: Modified Cope 36' Patrol boat build thread
Reelsong, I don't believe I've ever been involved with any build that incorporated that extensive amount of metal in a forming or tack up jig? The extent of that fixture is extraordinary. I can see the NC cut transverse elements but the bolt on edge thickeners? That is not immediately obvious to me?
Could you take time to explain those bolt on edges of the former/jig/fixture? Are they replaceable edges to allow tacking to this hull then unbolting and replacing the edges then tacking to the next boat?
I'd say by looking at the expense in the fixture you're exploring more than one build? 'I' beams in a building jig-did you say this was funded by the Government? Sure is a nice looking building fixture, I've seen plenty of boats framed poorly in comparison to your jig!!!
I see the xverse frame elements welded to the I or H beam tops outboard on the fixture, but... a curious set of holes or bolts or something along their lower edge? Do you have time to remark about this?
If you were able to pick up, and tack the bottom and chines by yourself, even with overhead, you're one fine hand! I couldn't do a similar amount of work in a few days, WITH HELP!
Very interesting lines that the chines become wider aft, the inner chine being essentially concave, in Plan, I don't think I've seen that line before? Is the designer willing to make statements about this element? I would asset this is perhaps unique, in the hull form, I've not seen or heard about this Plan View chine? Also the chine flat becomes a much greater percent of the bottom BOA; does the designer make any assertion about his element?
OK, I know you need to build not tutor us, but there are lots of questions raised by the pictures, that other may not ask you, but they're curious too!.
Sure does look like a fun build,
Cheers,
Kevin Morin

Re: Modified Cope 36' Patrol boat build thread
Kevin, the strips your referring to are sacraficial, thus being tacked to bottom plate then easisly removed as you lift out of jig, cleaned up and re usable, Bruce Cope states that there not needed but help keep you from etching into bottom plate when you have to grind tacks.
As far as the I Beam, it will become a major part of this boats trailer, otherwise I would have used steel for the frame. The jig frames are tacked only to the Ibeam on one side then bolted to angle iron so I can remove then just bend over and pop of allowing me to reuse the I beam for the trailer. I have a friend that may want the jig after I'm done.
Yes Kevin I did this alone this weekend with the help of my overhead boom and tacking pull hooks to bottom of plate then using my forklifts side shift to pull down tight into frame. once tight I tacked to sacraficial strips plate fit together quite nicely.
What sold me on the design is that the wide / variable chine made the bottom of this hull very simular in design to a glass SeeVee hull commonly ran on the east coast go fast center console boats. I'm hoping to achieve the same quality ride in an alloy boat. Bruce Cope would have to chime in on the actual design ,and I'll shoot him an email to see if he would do so.
No this is defintley not being funded by anyone but myself and the proceeds from the sale of my last build that went to Alaska. At this point, all aluminum, plans, Router cutting and shipping to my shop I'm sitting right on 35K in shiny stuff. As far as building this hull again I have no imediate plans, but one never knows. I sat on the jig frames from my last build for three years and now that I've cut them up the new owner has asked if I'd consider building that boat four more times for there Lodge, go figure.
Thanks for your interest in this project and I'll post after each weekends work. I'm sure I'll have some questions for you also if you dont mind. Have a good one and Cheers also from the Lower 48

Life is easy now.
Wait till the weld out begins in the heat. Good progress though and it does look good.

Hey Reelsong. How about an update? have you been working on the new build?
Re: Modified Cope 36' Patrol boat build thread
Heres a few pics, progress a little slow right now, been really busy. Went to Bristol Bay to help my bro for 10 days, then had to have cortisone shots in shoulders , then fire fighting on my property after a lightning strike which I twisted my knee a bit. (Love getting old) now trying to hobble around and get sides tacked on in the evenings.

Cope has a few new designs posted on his website. There are pics of another big offshore, similar to reelsong's but with a full cabin.
