It depends on many equations.............

Weather........
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/total_forecast/ ... ine=pzz655
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/soutwest_inset.shtml

Water temperature and locations.........
http://www.tempbreak.com

Fishing reports both private and party boats.......
http://sportfishingreport.com
http://www.sport-fish-info.com
http://fishingnetwork.net

Talking network with all your buddies at........

If you are new and want to learn and have safety in numbers buddy boat with friends.......
http://www.aluminumalloyboats.com Meet and greet section. Invite a bunch of us to come out and fish or buddyboat (two boats are better than one) with you.

Another great site for you to visit........
http://www.uscgboating.org/
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/

I have been on a private boat out to the Cortes Bank very rare occasion very favorable stable weather conditions......water conditions and buddy boated....... Cortes is 90 nautical miles out and 40 nautical mile from the closest island. For me it was definately beyond my comfort level.

Funny thing was we drove over "the big ones" by about 40 miles

I am sure the guys have more informative sites to add.

Great question!

I designed and build my boat to give me the range and safety to run 150NM on way at 25-Knots, troll 10-12 hours per day for three days, then run home 150NM at speed and still have a 50-70 gallon reserve for safety should I run into a storm.

If you look at the chart picture below, at the tip of the island is Montauk Point, my home port. On my last trip out last year, I was out three days and went to Hydrographes canyon, I run 145NM to Hydrographers canyon (the canyon is on the right side of screen, directly under the "g" in Hydrographer) and then back and I used only 222-gallons. Not bad, I think!

Like Mojomizer stated, it depends where the fish are! I don't mind big seas, but it reall slows the trip down so I try to pick days that leave me cruising instead of cursing because I can go my cruising speed!

Marty,
Dumb question but looking at that picture what makes the gulf stream turn east to Hydrographer's? What stop it from coming right in close to BI and Montauk?

Usually it is a counter clockwise rotation not a clockwise. It is hitting the 100 fathom shelf line and runs down it. The warm water will push up but not with such a disquished difference as close a 30NM from montauk. I am lucking to run to wher ehte water is 10-15,. South of block canyon tomorrow if I can
Get a crew. Next weekend I have to go to utha on business which the timing sucks1

The bait will be on the cold side of the edge and best when closest to the 100fathom line. We will go into and out of the warm water but the bigger fish will be on the cold side of the edge. Mty. .

Love my terrafin charts...............Block canyon looks good June 12 4:47pm. I cannot believe how fast the gulf stream moves and changes.

What water temps do you find favorable?
Do you use chlorophyl charts?

TEMPS

I like any large temperature breaks or differences that are closest to the 100-fathom line. Usually that is where the bait will bet taust around and balled up by the strong GS currents as the water rides up the shelf and meets the cooler water on the shelf earlier in the year. As the season get hot and temps overall get warmer and warmer I will once again look for cooler bodies that are on the 100 line.

The chlorophy haven't proven them selves out yet, just intersting data to research right now. mty

Running 50 to 150 miles to find better fishing (and get away from the tourists) is common here, but we're rarely outside the 3 or 5-mile EEZ.

Damn Ironwoodtuna, you have one hell of a boat!

Do you carry 300 gallons of fuel?

Right now I'm just lookin to go out to San Clemente Island, thats 50nm's out from my home port.

I'm averaging 3.5+MPG with a 72 gallon capacity, have all the electronics except Radar.

I follow all the Birds and Big Fishin Charter Boats to tell me where the fishes is

It's almost time calstabi
Here's a report that just got posted yesterday.
All these banks are within 40 miles of San Diego and you will need Mexican fishing permits for every person on board regardless if they are fishing or not.
